Our garments have a funny way of traveling. You design a piece in a quiet room, obsess over the cut and the textile, drop it into the world, and eventually, it finds its way onto a stage clear across the country.

When Grammy Award-winning artist Durand Bernarr took the stage recently, he wasn't just wearing any piece from our archives. He was wearing the literal foundation of our streetwear identity: the 2021 Essence By Soul "Sample Uniform."

Seeing this specific set in motion feels like a massive full-circle moment for us, and it’s worth breaking down the history behind it.

To understand the significance of this look, you have to go back to 2021. The "Sample Uniform" was the very first concept we ever produced under the Essence label. It was the blueprint—the experimental track that set the tone for the entire line's late-'90s and early-2000s R&B influence.

We didn’t mass-produce it. In fact, only 20 sets exist in the entire world.

It’s a foundational piece of Soul By Amé history. So, when we had the opportunity to connect with Durand last summer after his tour stop at a local block party here in Utah, we wanted to hand off something that carried real weight. We connected on the music, the narrative direction of the brand, and left him with a piece of our origins.

From the Blueprint to the Present

There’s a distinct quiet honor in seeing a generational vocal talent take a liking to the first idea you ever put on paper for a label. The "Sample Uniform" was our proof of concept. To see it living on stage years later—while the Essence label has grown to runways like Park City Fashion Week—is a stark reminder of why we anchored this brand in storytelling.
